*FIRST IMPRESSIONS*
My first impressions of the novel Things Fall Apart was that it was a well written novel and it described the Igbo tribe very well. I feel that the Igbo tribe is very unique and it has so many interesting and weird. I found it very interesting because how the Igbo tribes treat people and how they celebrate things. I find it interesting how they treat people because how men can have more than one wife at a time, how they treat their wives, and how people with a better title than an another isn’t treated as same as the man with the better title. How someone can treat a women/wife so disrespected and treated like dirt and does everything in the family when it comes to the hut. Also, someone shouldn’t be treated more poorly than another just because someone else has a better title. I think everyone should be treated the same.
How the Igbo tribe is different and similar. They are different by how people are more respected by their title and how they can have so many wives at one. It’s similar because of the “ agbala”. The agbala is an oracle that the Igbo tribe goes and sees when they are in trouble and they need direction. Some people in the U.S. goes to similar objects or people it depends on the persons and the person usually goes to the object and or person for help or direction. The difference between the U.S. and the Igbo tribe are how people can treat others because of their title. In the Igbo tribe people are respected by their title and in the U.S. people are the same but I was raised to treat people the same no madder who it is. Also, how in the Igbo tribe men can have more than one wife at a time and in the U.S. that it is illegal and its called polygamy.
This novel remined me of the movie "ace ventura pet dectetive when nature calls" because jim carrey in the movie has to find a rare bat but if he doesn't the two tribes fighting about it will go to war and it reminded me of the novel because in the novel two tribes were gonna go to war because of a girl's death but they exchanged a virgin and a young men aka the bat in the movie.
Journal Prompt #2
The Igbo Tribe’s masculinity and femininity are pretty normal but there are some weird things such as the men should not complain or show any type of emotion. Also, when a kid complains and if the father beats the child they think that’s a sign of being masculine and if the father doesn’t it shows that he cares and he is showing emotion and shows he is weak and not masculine. So, how some of these things the men are similar to men in present times are how the men sometimes don’t show emotion and that shows there cool or that they are masculine. The differences are how men should beat their kids if they should complain or not work hard. I think that beating your kid is wrong but only to some extent. For example, if they do something extremely bad then yes they deserve some sort of physical punishment, however if they complain I feel that they don’t deserve a physical beating.
The femininity of the Igbo tribe is different then the masculinity because of the total acts you should if you are a female rather than a male.
Journal #3 When He includes the story of the tortoise it was a big part of the story because of the moral, similarities, and differences. The moral of this story is being careful whom you trust and don’t let greed empower you. Also similarities with that story and stories told in our cultures. One that came to me is about a village hired a dragon to guard their treasures and everyone wanted to get on the dragons good gracious so they get some of the treasure and they gave the dragon food and eventually the dragon got stuck in the cave and the treasure was in that cave forever. Also, the differences are that the story in the novel told about greed and whom you trust and the story I motioned was about just greed. He told this story in this novel because he was foreshadowing about the missionaries coming soon. Also the movie I want to compare to this novel is “rush hour 2”. I chose this movie because the st ory I told I got from this movie .
